Lib Dem South West MPs step up campaign for fair water charges

10 June 2005

The ‘South West Team’ of Liberal Democrat MPs will meet consumer representatives ‘Watervoice’ next week, prior to a vital meeting with the water Minister.

The MPs will discuss with Watervoice the importance of persuading Government Ministers to step in and halt unaffordable South West water bills rising further. Truro and St Austell MP Matthew Taylor will then join local Watervoice members in a meeting with Elliot Morley MP, the Minister responsible for regulating the water industry. The meeting was arranged as a result of a special Parliamentary debate called by Mr Taylor on the issue, just before the General Election. Mr Taylor commented, “Our action in the last Parliament has already made the Minister sit up, now he must really take notice. The people in the South West just can’t afford yet more water bill increases.”

North Cornwall MP, Dan Rogerson, the newly elected Chair of the MPs’ group added, “Dr Noel Olsen and Watervoice have proved great advocates for a fairer deal for our region – Liberal Democrats will work with them to get a fair deal on water bills. Working together, we hope to make the Government listen.”

Adrian Sanders, MP for Torbay, who has triggered another Parliamentary debate on this issue – which will take place next Tuesday morning – added: “Enough is enough. The message coming through loud and clear from voters in the recent election campaign, was that they will not tolerate high water bills any more. They want to pay the same as the rest of the country. There are various ways this could be done – Government must choose one or other and then get on with it.”
