The South West Team of Liberal Democrat MPs for Devon and Cornwall today agreed to tabled an Early Day Motion, which urges the Government and Sport England to guarantee that the region receives increased funding to improve sporting facilities for grass-roots users in the run up to the London Olympics in 2012.
The MPs noted that the Olympics coming to London will provide an excellent opportunity for young people in the region to take part in sporting activities, but without the adequate funding to improve and create suitable facilities, the region’s youngsters will not be able to take part in the exciting build up to the Games.
Commenting, Dan Rogerson, MP for North Cornwall said “The Olympics will be an inspiration for many people across the region, from children hoping to compete in 2012, to older people who simply want to get fit.”
We should have access to sporting facilities that will match our community’s expectations; the Government with Sport England’s help, need to make certain that this happens.”
MP for Torbay, Adrian Sanders added “This is the perfect chance for Government to capitalise on a strategy to build upon communal facilities, linking it to an agenda of health and fitness.”
It is only right that an event as momentous as the Olympic Games should benefit the South West. It would be a tragedy if it were not used as a catalyst to improve grass-roots sports facilities and encourage greater participation in sport throughout the country.”
