Torbay MP Adrian Sanders has been talking to business people affected by the current works on Rock Walk, Torquay, and is backing a three point plan of action to help counter some of the problems being experienced.
He said: “There is no doubt that businesses have suffered greater losses as a result of the local authority’s failure to think through the consequences of such major works.
“The scale of the works has surprised everyone and serious questions are being asked about the necessity of such extensive clearing of trees and shrubs that historically have held in the cliff face and prevented rock falls.
“There are three immediate steps the elected Mayor should authorize.
1. Improved signage and information on the outskirts of Torquay and within the bay to direct people to Fleet Walk and the harbourside.
2. A liaison group should be established to report back to traders and businesses in the affected area. This should meet at least once a week, more often if necessary, and should be led by a member of the local authority’s senior management team.
3. Practical help should be offered to affected businesses pursuing compensation claims through their insurers, and appeals to the valuation office for reductions in business rates. The Council should also demonstrate an understanding of the predicament businesses are facing if disputes arise between them.
Adrian Sanders is hoping to meet a large group of affected parties later this week.
