Torbay MP, Adrian Sanders has co-sponsored a parliamentary motion congratulating I CAN, the children’s communication charity on its recent ‘Make Chatter Matter’ campaign.
I CAN works to support the development of speech, language and communication skills in all children with a special focus on those who have difficulties.
In the UK, 40-50 per cent of children are starting primary school without the basic speech and language skills they need to learn and make friends. I CAN estimates that on top of this, 10 per cent of children (an average of three in every classroom) have speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) – either as their primary disability or as part of another condition such as autism, dyslexia or cerebral palsy.
The motion , co- sponsored by Adrian and a cross party group of five other MPs , also calls on the Government to develop a national framework for speech and language that would ensure tat all local areas can provide services to support children with SLCN at every age and stage of development.
Adrian Commented:
“There are few things more important to a child’s development than their ability to communicate. Children with speech and language difficulties get left out and left behind. We cannot let this happen; these children must receive the support they need in order to flourish both at school and in life”.
