Torbay MP, Adrian Sanders, has approached the Minister for Employment, Caroline Flint, regarding yesterday’s announcement by Uniq that they plan to close the Riviera Desserts operation in Paignton.
Adrian has written to Ms Flint highlighting Torbay’s loss of over 4,500 manufacturing jobs in the last seven years of which the 400 announced yesterday at Riviera Desserts are just the latest.
Adrian has asked the Minister to do all in her power to ensure that anyone losing their job at Riviera Desserts is provided with the maximum assistance available. This includes support from the Jobcentre’s Rapid Response Service.
Adrian commented:
“With the lowest household income coupled with highest household debt in the region, Torbay’s economy is already fragile. These job losses will have a serious impact on the Bay’s economy."
“The priority here must be getting people back into work quickly and efficiently. There are Government led initiatives, such as the Jobcentre’s Rapid Response Service, that are designed to provide extra assistance when we are faced with large scale redundancies."
“I have asked the Minister to do all she can to ensure those constituents affected by yesterday's announcement will receive the maximum support available. I have also asked the Minsier for an urgent meeting to discuss what further support the Government can offer."
