Sanders Proposes Bill to Introduce Water Charging Fairness

8 March 2006

Torbay MP, Adrian Sanders, is to raise the issue of high water and sewerage charging in the South West in the House of Commons in a week’s time.

The 10 Minute Rule Bill to be debated on the 15th of March is titled the Water and Sewerage Charges (limit on Household Expenditure) Bill and seeks to ensure the government lifts thousands of local people out of water poverty.

Adrian Sanders said,

“Water and sewerage charges have increased by 48% in real terms across the UK since privatisation, and an alarming 85% in the South West. Landing bills of nearly £450 in the letterboxes of households across Devon and Cornwall is just not acceptable and causes distress to pensioners and vulnerable groups.

“My Bill proposes that a limit should be established on the percentage of household income spent on water and sewerage charges and to provide for the capping of domestic water and sewerage charges so that the percentage limit is not exceeded.

It is really important that this issue remains on the agenda and people are not forced to live in water poverty.”
