  • EDM 2556 (tabled by Adrian): That this House supports the International Diabetes Federation's Unite for Diabetes campaign, which aims to highlight the alarming rise of diabetes worldwide; notes with concern new data showing that more than 230 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and that the number of people living with diabetes is expected to grow to 350 million in less than 20 years if action is not taken; further notes that diabetes is one of the major causes of premature death worldwide, as every 10 seconds a person dies from diabetes-related causes and death rates are predicted to rise by 25 per cent. over the next decade; further notes that World Health Organisation research predicts that the condition could reduce life expectancy globally for the first time in 200 years and that almost six per cent. of the world's adult population now live with diabetes; and encourages Government support for a United Nations Resolution on diabetes, to secure the Resolution on World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2007.

  • EDM 2555 (tabled by Adrian):  That this House notes with concern that many coastal resorts in the UK experience seasonal employment fluctuations; is concerned that many workers in resorts experience low wages and employment uncertainty; further notes that the Government has no specific strategy to ensure year-round sustainable, fairly-paid employment; and calls on the Government to consider policies to address the difficulties coastal resort economies face out of the summer season.

  • EDM 2436: That this House fully shares the views expressed by Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge, Chairman of Visit Britain, in his letter to the Prime Minister of 1st June 2006, in which he expressed surprise at the omission of any reference to the importance of the visitor economy for the priorities of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport in the Prime Minister's Appointment Letter to the Secretary of State; is puzzled that such an oversight comes just six months after the Prime Minister hosted a breakfast for representatives of the tourist sector at which he emphasised his support for their efforts; is concerned at the lack of support and encouragement from Government for significant capital investments in infrastructure needed to continue the recent growth trend in overseas visitors, to help reduce the substantial deficit on the tourism account, and to prepare for a successful Olympic Games in 2012 and the legacy thereafter; deplores the lack of support from central, regional and local Government to bring about a cohesive and more efficient approach to tourism funding; and demands that tourism and the visitor economy be recognised as a real priority on the part of the Government

  • EDM 2324 (tabled by Adrian): That this House recognises that diabetes is a major cause of ill-health in the UK, affecting more than two million people; notes with concern that the prevalence of diabetes is increasing, particularly among high risk groups such as those who are overweight and those of black or Asian origin; acknowledges that diabetes is a condition largely managed by patients themselves; further notes with concern that the recent Government consultation on the arrangements for the provision of dressings and chemical reagents may lead to a potential reduction of £19 million in the associated complementary services provided by manufacturers of diabetes testing strips, therefore significantly reducing patients' ability to self-manage their diabetes; and calls on the Government to take urgent steps to reassure patients that any cuts resulting from the consultation will not jeopardise the high quality of diabetes care, products and services currently available.

  • EDM 2240: That this House expresses concern over the introduction of home information packs from 2007; notes that industry experts have advised that home information packs will add up to £1,000 to the cost of buying an average home and duplicate the ongoing need for a valuation or structural survey; believes that they will discourage potential sellers from putting their homes on the market; notes that smaller solicitors and estate agents may be adversely affected; observes that the Government will benefit from a potential £110 million VAT windfall from the packs and that the Home Condition Register could be used to conduct a council tax revaluation by stealth; questions the lack of a proper dry run and whether sufficient home inspectors will be properly trained by 2007; and calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to push for their implementation to be delayed or cancelled in order to protect the stability of the housing market.
